After a busy morning at the Robin Hill Country Park, we set off for Whippingham Church and Osborbone House.Whippingham Church (actually called the Church of St. Mildred) is the third church to have been built on this site. It has been a place of worship for nearly 1000 years. The present Church was designed by Prince Albert at the command of Queen Victoria in 1860. As we entered the church we were told what a Lychgate was for. They provided some weather-protection for the bearers as funeral parties paused on their way to the church. Queen Victoria often visited the Church as it was only a short distance from her home at Osborne House.

After spending some time at the church we got back onto the coach for out visit to Osborne House. Osborne House was built by Queen Victoria in 1845-51 as a country retreat. It was one of her favourite places as she was able to live here with her family without worry about her royal responsibilities. |
